Overview
Experience the natural beauty of Puerto Rico by getting active in its many unique and spectacular habitats. Local naturalists, biologists, experienced kayaking instructors, and certified dive masters team up to take you deep into the island’s diverse natural areas.
El Yunque is home to the highly endangered Puerto Rican Parrot (which is relying on its survival through a captive breeding program supported by the US Forest Dept and by private donations). You will get to traverse the mountain trails of El Yunque’s rainforest after an enlightening video at the El Portal Visitors Center.
Hike the Old San Juan, Kayak the mangroves in the morning, and snorkel the coral reefs in a full day in Culebra.
Experience an evening of unique light displays from micro-organisms called dinoflagellates that produce an eerie electric-blue glow in the water when disturbed. Fajardo Bay is home to one of the island’s bioluminescent bays where you can watch this display from your Kayak.
We will spend one full day in Culebra, situated between the main island of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, which is one of the Caribbean’s most pristine eco-destinations with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. We’ll snorkel under expert guidance in breathtakingly beautiful and warm turquoise waters. With luck, we may see turtles, colorful fish, and other marine life.
The tour is rounded off with a guided walk and presentation in Old San Juan followed by a free afternoon to explore the old town at your leisure.
Our Program
Unless otherwise specified, the Group Leader will lead all lectures, field trips, and birding exercises. Transportation throughout the program will be provided by passenger vans or motor coaches unless otherwise noted. As wildlife and weather are unpredictable, changes in times and locations may occur, even at the last minute.
Meals at restaurants will be plated and served dishes featuring regional specialties with soft drinks, coffee, tea, and water included unless otherwise noted.
Free time is reserved for your personal independent exploration. Evenings at leisure offer opportunities to make the tour more meaningful and memorable through personal independent exploration, engaging in available activities on your own, or simply relaxing and making new friends among fellow participants. The Group Leader will always be happy to offer suggestions.
